P. 13 Introduction - Add: Transit of Vessels in the Vicinity of International Airports: Papeete, Tahiti: Chanel de Faaa (P. 114, para 5) - The runway at the international airport has been enlarged to cope with Airbus 300 and Boeing 757 airplanes. The skipper of a vessel with a height of more than 5m (15 ft.) planning to transit Chenal de Faaa in either direction between Papeete Harbor and the Taina/Maeva area must call "Papeete Port Control" on International VHF Ch 12 when reaching a boundary line marked with yellow buoys and a large sign in French and English. The skipper must request permission to traverse Chanel de Faaa and a response in English will be made. Papeete Port Control will tell the captain to stand by while a call is made to the Air Traffic Control Tower to determine if heavy air traffic is expected. After clearance with the air traffic controller Port Control will call the vessel and tell the skipper to proceed or wait, depending on expected air traffic. If a small plane such as a Piper Cub is landing then permission will be granted but if a wide-bodied aircraft is expected the vessel will be told to wait.
The best time to transit Chenal de Faaa is around noon when there is little international air traffic. From about 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. the departure of numerous international flights make this the least desirable time to approach the restricted area.
Raiatea Airport ( P. 140): A system similar to that established when transiting Chanel de Faaa near Papeete has been implemented in the vicinity of the Raiatea International Airport. When crossing the imaginary extended runway line of the airport a vessel of more than 5m (15 ft.) in height must call Raiatea Airport Control on VHF Ch 16 to request permission to cross the flight path. This affects all boats heading from the eastern estuaries to the Raiatea Carenage area and vice versa. Those vessels passing through the eastern fairways proceeding north to Tahaa are not affected.
